The first Survival Courses designed to train seafarers in basic survival techniques at sea was launched on National Maritime Day on 4th April 1981. Later in 1985 two pairs of davits were added and courses for Proficiency in Survival Craft were initiated. In 1997 a single arm davit with a rescue boat was also installed and now courses in Personal Survival Techniques and Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats are conducted in compliance with STCW '95. The establishment is a member and country representative of the International Association of Sea Survival Training, UK (IASST). It is now housed in the basement of Sagarika Hostel which was completed in January 2001
